Attached Garage Installs
An attached garage is the easiest place to install a charger. The panel is often on a garage wall or just inside the house, so the wire run is short.
We mount the charger near where your charge port ends up when you park. Many owners also add a hook or holster so the cable stays off the floor and out of the way of the garage door.
If your panel is in a basement or on the far side of the house, the wire can usually run through the attic or along the garage ceiling.
Outdoor and Driveway Installs
No garage, or a garage full of everything but the car? A charger on an outside wall, under a carport, or on a post by the driveway works just as well.
Outdoor installs need a few things an indoor install doesn't:
- A charger rated for outdoor use. Look for a NEMA 3R or NEMA 4 rating on the spec sheet.
- Wire rated for wet locations, inside sealed conduit.
- If you use an outlet, a weather resistant one with an in use cover that stays closed while plugged in.
- GFCI protection on the circuit.
Charlotte summers bring heavy rain and thunderstorms, so these details matter. Skipping them is how outdoor outlets and fittings fail early.
Garage or driveway? Call and we'll help you pick the best spot.

The best spot is close to your charge port and as close to the panel as you can get. A shorter wire run costs less.
Measure from the wall to your charge port before you choose. Most charger cables run between 18 and 25 feet. Keep the cable out of walkways where someone could trip, and away from where you swing the car door.
If two cars share the driveway, think about where each one parks. A spot between the two bays can reach both.
Detached Garages
A detached garage usually needs wire run underground from the house, and sometimes a small subpanel in the garage. It's a bigger job than an attached garage, but it's very doable.
What It Costs
ContractorPlus estimates $1,464 to $2,928 for an EV charger install in Charlotte. Attached garages near the panel tend to land at the low end. Long outdoor runs and underground wire push it higher.
